  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 loaf refrigerated pizza dough (about 13.8 ounces)
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg beaten (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for garnish)

Method
 

  1. Prepare the pizza dough by rolling it out into a large rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. Caramelize the onions in a skillet with olive oil, salt, and sugar over medium heat for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  3. Mix shredded Gruyère cheese, cream cheese, and black pepper in a bowl, then fold in the cooled caramelized onions.
  4. Spread the cheese and onion mixture over the rolled-out pizza dough, roll it into a log, and shape it into a wreath.
  5. Make cuts every 1-2 inches along the outer edge of the wreath, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with seeds if desired.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
