Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, brown sugar, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: buttermilk, egg, and gin extract.
Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and work it into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. Then pour in the wet ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, knead gently, and pat into a circle about 1-inch thick. Cut into 8 wedges and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the tops with the egg wash and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
Allow to cool slightly before serving.
