  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 0.5 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 8 ounces lasagna noodles, broken into pieces
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Method
 

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté for 5 minutes until translucent. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  2. Add ground beef or Italian sausage and cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it apart as it browns. Drain excess fat. Stir in oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes, cooking for another minute.
  3. Pour in crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Bring to a boil. Add broken lasagna noodles, stir well, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir in ricotta cheese until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot, topped with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese, garnished with fresh basil if desired.
